What happened in 2018?
Tesla reported producing 5,031 Model 3 vehicles in the final seven days of the second quarter. Its new GA4 assembly line contributed roughly one-fifth of that week’s Model 3 output. Those figures describe a particular period, not the average rate across the quarter.
The same release reported 28,578 Model 3s produced during Q2 and 18,440 delivered. A vehicle leaving assembly and a customer receiving it are different events. Tesla said a substantial number remained in transit at quarter-end. This distinction matters when evaluating how quickly factory progress becomes customer fulfillment.
Why one record week is not the whole answer
In its Q3 update, Tesla reported 53,239 Model 3 vehicles produced and identified delivery and outbound logistics as its main challenges after production stabilized. The constraint had moved. A leader who continues optimizing yesterday’s bottleneck can miss the next problem.
How to analyze the decision
Our analysis starts by asking what a target is supposed to achieve. Is the priority proving that the line can reach a rate, maintaining that rate, or putting completed cars in customers’ hands? These goals overlap, but they need different evidence. A useful dashboard distinguishes throughput, repeatability, and fulfillment instead of combining them into one victory number.
Then consider the cost of the intervention. Extra capacity can relieve an immediate constraint while creating more coordination work. A slowdown can make a process easier to repair while extending customer waits. Neither choice is automatically responsible or reckless: the decision depends on what is broken, what can be fixed, and how long the company can absorb the delay.
Before committing, define a review point. What observation would show that the plan is working? What would make you stop? A strategy becomes more useful when the conditions for changing it are specified before the next public milestone.

- More finished vehicles do not remove transport and handover constraints. Track the entire path to the customer.

- A firm public promise creates focus, but revising it becomes harder. Decide which evidence should outweigh the promise.

- How would you explain a delay without making a promise the system cannot support?
